**There
are some spoilers on this page (SailorStars).**
Yaten
is a member of the Three Lights with Seiya and Taiki... OK, basically
you pretty much either love Yaten or you hate him in this show.
He's somewhat...opinionated... snobbish... rude... (Basically, he's
a bitch.) I personally really like him. I think he's adorable (he's
also really short), he's got a great voice, and he can kick some
serious butt. Luna has a little kitty-crush on him at one point.
(And the Inners - especially Minako - get really upset at her and
insanely jealous because she took a bath with Yaten. They wail and
moan that they wish they were cats so they could take a bath with
him too.)
Yaten is the most anti-social of the group. He abhors physical labor,
thus he hates sports. He also gets very easily annoyed and tends
to be rude to his fans, going so far as to tear up love letters
without reading them, hanging up on them when they call, or telling
them to leave him alone in no uncertain (or sensitive, despite his
attack name) terms. Seiya and Taiki try to tell him to be a little
nicer or their fans will start to dislike the group, but it's just
his prickly personality.
He's not at all afraid to speak his mind, and he usually verbally
expresses his contempt of the Inners. (My friend Cree and I have
a running gag about the relationship between the Inners, Outers,
and Starlights in this season - the Inners are chasing after the
Starlights with their little "Why can't we all just get along?"
rhetoric, while the Outers are saying, "Leave them alone," and the
Starlights are saying "Leave us alone." ...Yeah, OK, so you kind
of had to be there for it to be funny, I guess...)
Yaten
thinks the band should just stick to their mission, and let the
people of Earth take care of their own planet. Taiki shares this
philosophy to a point, and Seiya did at first, but is drawn more
and more to the Inner Senshi and Sailormoon and the crises they're
facing in the fight for Earth.
While Yaten can come across as cruel or cold, he's actually a very
sensitive person. After they find Princess Kakyuu, he still wants
to just get away and leave Earth to go rebuild their planet that
Galaxia destroyed, but when Princess Kakyuu implores the Starlights
to work with Sailormoon, he (at first reluctantly) complies. When
he realizes that working with Sailormoon and the others is the only
way to ensure future safety for the whole galaxy, he gives his all
and does all he can, along with everyone else, to stop Galaxia's
evil.
A
Note On The Three Lights:
Seiya Kou, Taiki Kou, and Yaten Kou are not brothers, and
if you're confused about their names, yes - Kou is their first
name. They all have the same first name. They are called by their
last names to avoid confusion. I know some people argue this point,
but I don't want a bunch of people e-mailing me to tell me I have
it wrong - I'm going by what I've seen and heard in the anime, as
well as what's written on Hitoshi
Doi's Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Page. Hitoshi Doi's site is
one of the foremost informational sites on the series. Go through
the three Starlights pages and look at the kanji for their names.
"Kou", or the very last symbol in their names, is obviously their
first name. Don't forget that the family name comes first in Japan.
As far as the whole guys-changing-into-girls thing, I'm only going
by the anime. I'm not 100% positive about what the story is in the
manga - I've heard so many conflicting things that I don't want
to give any specific view as fact until I hear it from someone who
speaks Japanese and has read the entire original manga, not
a translated version. In the anime, the Starlights are originally
women on their planet. They disguise themselves as men when they
come to Earth looking for Princess Kakyuu, the ruler of their planet
that was destroyed by Galaxia. Their reasoning is that it will be
easier for them to find her if they become an idol band with a large
female fan base and try to send her their message through their
music. If you watch their transformation sequences, you'll see that
they definitely...take on more female qualities (o.O) when they
become the Starlights.
